Earth Day Air Inflatable Structure on Union Square 14th street, NY. [22 APR 1970]

1970s

The bubble of Earth Day: Structure on Union Sq, 5th ave, designed by Yukihisa Isobe was an inflated air structure(100m length, 90m width, 30m height) sponsored by Earth People’s of Park, a New York commune concerned with eco-technology. The coordinator of New York’s Earth Day was Environmental Action Coalition, a recently formed group responsible for involving nearly 200 environmental groups in the city.

Day, when streets were closed to traffic, petitions were signed, speeches were given, a teach-in and people more aware of problems was important. If more national holidays of this sort occur, perhaps conceptual groundwork for change will be laid. as someone put it, “Every day Never Seemed so Obscene”.
