“Drug-Free Music Festival to Rock Hart Island”

The 2nd annual Phoenix House Summer Happing had taken place on 30 Aug 1970, from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. at Hart Island(Bronx, NYC) with 8,000 people expected to swing during what is billed as “The drag-free rock music festival” to celebrate “a life without drags”. Performers did their thing under a 700,000 cubic foot flexible plastic “babble habitation” City of The Future design Designed by Yukihisa Isobe, an environmental planner.

The Happing is “a living example of what Phoenix House tries to teach all its members to live without drag” according to Dr. Mitchel S. Rosenthal, Deputy Commissioner of the Addiction Service Agency of NYC.

The annual festival fundraising event was put together entirely by the former addict and people who have messed up. Their lives with drag people society thinks can’t do anything for themselves or anybody else.
