North by North West, 2024
In the 2021 project, a 100-meter diameter compass was superimposed on the wind direction curve displayed on the ground at the lower plaza of Nanakura Dam. It marked the direction NNW (North-Northwest) at 22.5 degrees, facing the course of the Takase River, tracing its source from below Nanakura Dam and also outlining the river’s subsequent flow toward the southeast (SE). Additionally, the process and results of the aforementioned survey were displayed on several digital signs at the lower plaza of Nanakura Dam.
The Takase River originates from the Minamata River and flows east from the Takase Regulation Pond to the Takase Dam, forming the Matsumoto Basin. The Takase and Nanakura Dams redirect the river westward, flowing down to Nanakura Dam.
Subsequently, the river changes course to the west, merging with the Kashima River, Kago River, and Nougu River near the Takase River Comprehensive Power Station, then joins the Sai River in the Matsumoto Basin to become the Chikuma River. It changes its name to the Shinano River at the Niigata Prefecture border (Tsugawa Town), carving through the Echigo Plateau, collecting the flows of the Nakatsu and Kiyotsu Rivers, and eventually discharging into the Sea of Japan at Niigata City.
